田代 勉（翠舟）

Tsutomu Tashiro (Suishu) is a Japanese Nihonga artist (traditional Japanese painting) and a member of the Japan-Europe Palace Art Association.
He has exhibited his works both in Japan and internationally, pursuing a distinctive artistic vision while building upon the rich traditions of Nihonga.

田代勉（翠舟）は、日本画家、日欧宮殿芸術協会会員。日本国内のみならず海外でも作品を発表し、日本画の伝統を礎としながら独自の芸術表現を追求している。

  Forest by the Water III 

 水辺の森Ⅲ 

Artist’s Statement

I began my creative journey by writing contemporary poetry.
After encountering Nihonga (Japanese-style painting), I started publishing collections that combined poetry and painting.
In visual art, expressing poetic sensibilities through color presents its own challenges.
It often leads me toward unexplored horizons, where words and images engage in a constant dialogue within me
—sometimes in harmony, sometimes in tension, and at times giving rise to imaginary flowers blooming in a realm beyond ordinary perception.
As I completed *Forest by the Water II*, I found myself reflecting on the striking blue that fills this work.
Such a vivid, expansive blue is unusual in my paintings.
Amid the uncertainties and turmoil of today’s world, I believe I unconsciously chose this color while painting, guided by a simple wish
: that people may soon be able to live in peace once again and look up at a clear blue sky without fear or anxiety.

現代詩といわれる詩を書き、日本画に出会ってからは詩画集として発刊するようになりました。絵画では色彩による詩的表現の難しさがあり、それ故に未知の地平を彷徨たりもする。
この二つの流れは、わたしの中ではせめぎ合い、もみあったり、異次売空間に幻の花を咲かせたりもする。
そして今回「水辺の森 II」を描き上げて、思う。突き抜けるような青は、私には珍しい。
暗雲漂う世情にあって一日も早く人々の生活が、ただ普通に青空を見上げるように安穏であれと祈るばかりに、ほとんど無意識にこの色彩を選び、筆をすすめていたように思う。

The sky we look up to is the same, no matter where we are in the world.
May we raise our eyes to it not with hatred, but with hearts that are a little clearer, and with thoughts of one another.

Japan-Europe Palace Art Association Commentary

The Nihonga paintings of Tsutomu Tashiro (Suishu) intertwine landscapes of nature with landscapes of the human spirit.
Drawing upon his background as a poet, he transforms forests, rivers, and skies into spaces for quiet reflection rather than mere depictions of scenery.

In this work, the striking expanse of blue conveys both clarity and a sense of prayer, enveloping the moonlit forest and waterside in profound stillness.
The carefully rendered trees and flowing water reflect a deep respect for nature, while the atmosphere offers a moment of calm apart from the noise of contemporary life.

Rooted in the traditions of Nihonga, Suishu’s art unfolds as a distinctive world where poetry and painting resonate as one.

田代勉（翠舟）の日本画は、自然の風景を描きながら、その奥に人間の心の風景を重ね合わせている。
詩人としての感性を背景に持つ作家らしく、森や水辺、空といったモチーフは単なる自然描写に留まらず、静かな思索の場として画面の中に息づいている。
本作に広がる印象的な青は、澄明さと祈りの感覚を同時に湛え、月光に照らされた森と水辺に深い静寂をもたらしている。
緻密に描かれた樹々や流れる水には自然への敬意が感じられ、その佇まいからは現代社会の喧騒を離れた心の安らぎが静かに立ち現れる。
伝統的な日本画の技法を礎としながらも、そこには詩と絵画が響き合う翠舟独自の世界が広がっているのである。
