Genten Motodori – Finding and Living Your Truth

Artist’s Statement

There are things we forget. There are also things we must never forget.
As we move through life, there are moments when we are suddenly reminded of them.
Sometimes, even the memories we thought we wanted to leave behind find their way back to us.

Perhaps that place is our  genten—our point of origin.

If we can truly say that we are living in the colors our hearts love, then perhaps that is our own motodori—a return to who we really are.
When we encounter the beauty and strength of nature’s colors, the world we thought we knew can appear slightly different.

“It’s okay to start from here.”
“It’s okay to start now.”

The moment we believe that, we can begin again, creating new colors as we move forward.
And perhaps, along the way, we will once more encounter the *moto*—the source that quietly gives us the courage to keep going.

Japan-Europe Palace Art Association Commentary

Tomomi Tanaka’s artificial flower creations quietly invite viewers to turn their gaze toward the inner essence that lies at the core of human existence.
Her work extends far beyond the celebration of floral beauty, weaving together profound themes of memory, renewal, and self-discovery into richly layered three-dimensional forms.

Particularly striking in Origin — Returning to One’s True Self is the dynamic flow of vivid colors that intertwine and circulate throughout the composition.
The overlapping curves evoke the pathways of life and the traces of human emotion,
while the continuous movement rising and falling through the structure suggests the perseverance of those who continue forward despite uncertainty and struggle.
Rich greens and deep blues imbue the work with the vitality of nature, bringing both tranquility and strength into harmonious balance.

Underlying Tanaka’s artistic expression is not a longing to return to the past, but a desire to reconnect with one’s authentic self.
Color functions not merely as decoration, but as a symbolic language that awakens forgotten sensibilities and dormant hopes.
The remarkable harmony that emerges from the work’s complex composition reflects a deep trust in the human capacity to find encouragement, renewal, and the strength to move forward once again.
At its heart, the work embodies a sincere affirmation of living truthfully and fully as oneself.
