The Sakura-Eared Cat
桜猫
Artist’s Statement
This work portrays a black cat known in Japan as a “sakura-eared cat.”
The name comes from the small notch on the tip of its ear, whose shape resembles a cherry blossom petal.
This mark indicates that the cat has been cared for and protected through a community animal welfare program, allowing it to live safely while being watched over by local residents.
I often saw this cat together with its family from the time it was young, and I would encounter them in the same place whenever I walked my dog. Its quiet presence reminded me of the warmth of small lives around us and the precious value of every living being.
Message from the Artist
This work was created from the feelings nurtured through those everyday encounters.
I would be delighted if it leaves a gentle and lasting impression in the hearts of those who view it.
Amaharashi
雨晴
Artist’s Statement
This work depicts the beautiful view of the Tateyama Mountain Range as seen from Amaharashi Coast, overlooking Toyama Bay in Toyama Prefecture.
While living in the Hokuriku region for nearly three years due to my husband’s work assignment, I visited this place many times and was deeply moved by the magnificent mountains rising beyond the sea.
The contrast between the majestic 3,000-meter peaks of the Tateyama Range standing clearly in the crisp air and the calm expanse of the sea evokes both the richness of nature and its quiet strength.
Message from the Artist
This work expresses my deep gratitude for the natural beauty of Hokuriku. It also carries my heartfelt sympathy and support for those affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake.
I would be grateful if this work leaves viewers with a sense of peace and quiet reflection.
Japan-Europe Palace Art Association Commentary
Eiko Sakai’s oil paintings are distinguished by a sincere and attentive gaze toward the living beings and landscapes that surround her.
Rather than idealizing her subjects, she seeks to preserve the emotions, memories, and quiet impressions cultivated through everyday experience, bringing them to the canvas with honesty and care.
In her painting of the black cat, the texture of the animal’s fur and the clarity of its luminous eyes are rendered with remarkable sensitivity, conveying the quiet presence of a single life.
Beyond affection for animals, the work reflects a deep respect for the small lives that coexist alongside us.
In contrast, her depiction of Amaharashi presents the grandeur of nature through an expansive and assured painterly approach.
The snow-covered Tateyama Mountain Range rising beyond the sea transcends a mere representation of scenery, embodying personal memories of the place and a profound appreciation for the natural world.
Throughout Sakai’s work, compassion for living beings and reverence for the landscape exist in natural harmony.
Through familiar scenes and subjects drawn from everyday life, her paintings invite viewers to reflect anew on the relationship between humanity and nature.
