Sachiko Iwama is a Japanese doll and Oshie artist, as well as a member of the Japan-Europe Palace Art Association.
She exhibits her works in Japan and internationally.

Artist’s Statement

More than half a century has passed since I first began studying doll-making.
As I continued creating, I came to realize that the very existence of dolls—an art form passed down since ancient times
—had become the foundation of my artistic expression and the central theme of my work throughout the years.
I believe that the essence embodied within dolls can be expressed through the ideas of “humanity, love, and form.”
While carefully preserving the tradition of costume dolls born in the Edo period, I hope to share with people around the world the beauty of Japanese kimono,
the delicate expressions of the face and body, the elegance of posture, and the uniquely Japanese sense of movement and beauty that lives within each gesture.
By creating while staying close to the spirit of each doll, I feel that I am finally able to convey my own heart and emotions to others.
It brings me great joy to know that people can experience and appreciate this artistic lineage
—from Oshie works, through the costume dolls of the Heian and Edo periods, and into contemporary creative costume dolls today.
Oshie no Ryo (“Cool Breeze of Oshie”) was created on a hot summer day while I felt the wind flowing into the room through the window.
I would be very happy if this work allows viewers to experience even a small sense of coolness and serenity.

人形作りを学んで半世紀以上が過ぎました。
制作していくにつれて、古代からの人形というものが、私の美術展の基盤となり、テーマとしてきました。
人・愛・形　が間違いではないと思いました。
そして江戸時代に生まれた衣裳人形の伝統を生かして、世界の人々に日本の着物の美しさや顔、体の表情の見せ方姿など、その時の動きで日本美術の魅力を人形の気持ちに寄り添いながら伝えることができればと思っています。
ようやく心と想いが人々に伝えられるからなと思っています。
押絵の平安時代、江戸時代の衣裳人形を経て現代の創作衣裳人形で皆様が楽しんでいただけることを嬉しく思います。
押絵の涼（りょう）は暑い夏の日、窓から部屋に入る風を感じながら作品を作りました。涼しさを感じてもらえたら嬉しいです。

人形制作を学び始めてから、半世紀以上の歳月が過ぎました。
制作を重ねるなかで、古代より受け継がれてきた「人形」という存在そのものが、私の美術表現の基盤であり、長年のテーマとなっていきました。
そして私は、「人・愛・形」という在り方こそ、人形に込められた本質なのではないかと感じています。
また、江戸時代に生まれた衣裳人形の伝統を大切に受け継ぎながら、日本の着物の美しさや、顔や身体の繊細な表情、姿の見せ方、そして一瞬の動きの中に宿る日本美術の魅力を、世界の人々へ伝えていければと思っています。
人形の心に寄り添うように制作することで、ようやく自分の心や想いを人々へ届けられるのだと感じています。
押絵から始まり、平安時代、江戸時代の衣裳人形を経て、現代の創作衣裳人形へと繋がる流れの中で、皆様に作品を楽しんでいただけることを大変嬉しく思います。
「押絵の涼（りょう）」は、暑い夏の日に、窓から部屋へ吹き込む風を感じながら制作した作品です。
この作品から、少しでも涼やかさを感じていただけましたら幸いです。

Sachiko Iwama’s Oshie works are grounded in more than half a century of experience in doll-making, giving rise to a refined artistic world that carries the spirit of Japanese tradition into the present day.
Throughout her creations runs a consistent philosophy centered on “humanity, love, and form,” through which she delicately conveys the emotional presence that resides within each figure.
Particularly distinctive in Iwama’s work is the combination of masterful craftsmanship rooted in the tradition of Japanese costume dolls and a profound understanding of feminine elegance in Japanese culture.
Graceful gestures, serene expressions, and meticulously rendered kimono patterns come together to create scenes of remarkable poise and refinement.
Although Oshie is fundamentally a flat art form, her compositions possess a striking sense of depth and narrative, capturing the essence of Japanese aesthetics within a single gesture or moment.
At the heart of Sachiko Iwama’s artistic practice lies a desire to create while remaining close to the spirit of the figure itself.
By connecting the traditions of Oshie, the Japanese art of sculptural picture dolls, with contemporary sensibilities, she imbues her work with a gentle sense of life and presence.
Through expressions of seasonal beauty, human emotion, and quiet grace, her art reflects the subtle sensibilities that have long been cherished within Japanese culture.

岩間幸子の押絵作品は、長年にわたり培われた人形制作の経験を礎に、日本の伝統美を現代へと受け継ぐ端正な造形世界を築いている。
その表現には「人・愛・形」という作家自身の一貫した思想が流れ、人形や人物に宿る心の気配までも繊細に映し出している。
とりわけ岩間幸子の作品には、衣裳人形の伝統に根差した確かな技術と、日本女性の美意識への深い理解が感じられる。優雅な所作、静かな眼差し、そして丹念に表現された着物の文様は、それぞれが調和しながら気品ある情景を生み出している。平面的な押絵でありながら、そこには豊かな奥行きと物語性が息づき、一瞬の仕草の中に日本文化の美が映し出されている。
